Huenerberg

Huenerberg sticks out of the Taunus mountainside coming down from Altkoenig as a rocky isolated back. Since its steeply rugged rocks are up to 30 meters high in the north, west and south, it has been given shelter to people in danger and used for permanent residency in earlier times. The names goes back to people believing a great power (Huenen = the giants) was necessary to compile the huge and impressive circular embankment surrounding the mountain heights. It enclosed the rocky mountain plateau with its washouts and connects the lower plain east side. Throughout the western part the wall, which had been built as a dry mortarless construction about 1,80 meters in thickness, had been constructed at the outer edge of the mountain plateau on the corner of a scarp, while the existing rock formations were skillfully integrated.

Today the remaining wall can only be seen as a minor rampart or as a step on the mountainside. A semi-circle shaped 6,4 meter wide dry mortarless wall with wooden stiffeners and preliminary trenches enclosed parts of the lower montain side (bottom plateau) and connects the rocky formations in the north and south, final branches of the upper plateau.

In the lower area of the east used to be the entrance gate; most of it has been destroyed when the material was used for other construction projects. Excavations in the year 1886 by A. v. Cohausen and in 1909/10 by Ch. L. Thomas and their findings declare the Huenerberg to be of Frankonian origin. More recent findings confirmed this thesis and proved the existence of the castle during Carolingian times in the 8/9th century AD.

Numerous findings attest the presence of humans of the “Urnenfelder Culture“ (1200-750 B.C.), „Hallstatt Culture”(750-600 B.C.) and the Roman Emperor´s Reign in the 1.-2. Century AD on the Huenerberg.
