A huge Celtic settlement, surrounded by the town wall which can be still recognized today, expanded in the late centuries BC on the hills „Altenhoefe“ and „Goldgrube“ on both sides of Heidetraenk creek and further into the valley, the starting point for the tour. It was probably the first settlement which resembled a large city in present day Rhein-Main region.
On the archeological round route to the “Goldgrube” (goldmine) you will see a significant part of the largest prehistoric natural memorial on Hessian grounds. The route is about 4,3 kilometer long and will pass the most important locations of the historical celtic town. It takes about two hours to walk this tour.
Follow the route by the assistance of signs located on the forkings: Celts´ Round Tour is symbolized by a Celts´s stylized head that was formerly stamped on a coin, the so-called „Nauheimer Quinar“.
The 16 information boards in German, English and French language explain the process of reconstruction, while maps and pictures show remnants that were found on te territory of the circular embankment´s ruins ( town wall, gates, settlement areas). It will give you an insight into the life of Celts in the Taunus Mountains.
