St. Ursula church is the town´s landmark. Excavations on the location of the church confirm that religious buildings were constructed on the grounds more than 1000 years ago. St. Ursula itself has been built in the middle of the 15th century.
The tower was built from 1479 until 1498 as a guard and bell tower “Hohe Wacht”. The residents of Oberursel wanted to emphasize the importance of their town by erecting
this church as well as city hall, so all financially strong members of the community contributed.
On the grounds where the new church was to be built there had already been a parish church dating back to the 12th century. The old church was originally destined to be replaced by the new one, but during the construction the sponsors realized that it was going to cost much more than they had expected - and therefore the old church was not renewed, but reconstructed. This explains why the layout of St. Ursula´s features irregularities.
After being destroyed in the Thirty Years´ War the church was rebuilt in 1645.
