The history of Oberstedten
817 First certified record of „Stedti“. In early medieval times, the area called Stedten is formed by Oberstedten (Upper Stedten) as well as Mittelstedten (Middle Stedten) and Niederstedten (Lower Stedten)
1263 First certified record of Niederstedten („Niederstetten“). The village has been abandoned after 1587. In 1272 Oberstedten and in 1303 Mittelstedten („mediocrem Stedin“) was documented for the first time. Mittelstedten has been desolated by 1420.
In the 13th century Mister Wortwin “without any noble background” from Steden establishes his residence. He founds the fortress Hohenberg (Homburg) and in 1200 sells it to Gottfried I. von Eppstein.
1433 Oberstedten als well as the fortress Hohenburg goes to Gottfried III. von Eppstein and for the most part shares the fate with Homburg. From 1622 on it belongs to the local gentry of Hessen-Homburg, while the Prussian king rules the land from the year 1866 on.
1526 Introduction of the Protestant religion. The construction of the church, dating back to 1706/1715, has been rebuilt in 1954/1955 and is still in use today.
1622 During The Thirty Years´ War Oberstedten has been heavily ransacked, but spared from arson. In 1634 a mandatory fire brigade was established, while in 1907 the voluntary fire department was founded.
1813 At the partitioning of the “Hohen Mark “ (timbered cooperative society), whose lord of the manor happened to be Wortwin von Stedten, Oberstedten receives part of the land.
1827 Construction of a new school while the old school buildings, which had been established in 1691/1693, were sold. In 1901 the school was reconstructed and served as city hall from 1966 until 1972.
1848 Revolution: Discharge and reelection of the mayor and the local committee.
1909/1910 Construction of the Jewish convalescent homes of Frankfurt´s Eduard and Adelheid Kann-donation. In 1935 and 1938 the destruction and vandalizing of the building took place alongside the banishment of the population. In 1957, present day “Reformhaus Fach Academy” takes up residence.
1936/1938 Construction of the “Reichsiedlungshof”, in 1939 partially transformed into „Dulag Luft“ (transit camp of the German Air Force). From 1945 until 1993 US military territory.
1964 Opening of the newly constructed Catholic church of St. Petrus Canisius.
1967 Completion of the multipurpose hall „Taunushalle“.
1972 On the basis of local government reform, Oberstedten becomes part of Oberursel on April 1st, 1972. The committee protecting the interests of Oberstedten starts working in Oktober of 1972.
Nowadays, about 6000 people live in Oberstedten.
