Stierstadt

The history of Stierstadt

791 First certified record of „Steorstat“ and Oberursel in the “Lorscher Codex”. The status of being state-run corresponds to both of them. The name dates back to Franconian settlement.

1537 Stierstadt has 40 homes, by the year 1615 the number has increased to 47. In 1648 only 19 families and 8 widows (as houshold committee) remain, resulting from pillages (1622), looting, and being forced to provide quarters for the soldiers during the Thirty Years´ War (1618-1648).

1814 Birth of publicist and German writer Dr. Aloys Henninger. He founds the private trade evening school in Oberursel and initiates the foundation of Oberursel´s local trade association.

1892 First factory in place: Frankfurt “Broncefarben- and Blattmetallfabrik” in the former “Neumühle”. During WW II it is meant to serve as a munition factory. From 1947 until 1990 it accommodates a glassworks estate, named „Hessenglaswerke GmbH“, which was founded by one of the refugees of Sudeten German origin.

1918-1929 French and English occupation as a result of WW I.

1933 The mayor has been replaced by a national socialist successor. On January 1, 1934 the (democratic) district council has been dissolved. On March 29th 1945, WW II. and the totalitarian regime that took the lives of countless poeple ended with the invasion of US American troops.

1954 By 1949 the „Eremiten-Presse“ was founded in Frankfurt and then moved to Stierstadt. It remained there until 1972. Nowadays bibliophils consider these works to be extremely valuable and rare.

1971 Town twinning with the Dutch community Ursem (as of 1979 Ursem belongs to the community Wester-Koggenland).

1972 On the basis of local government reform, Stierstadt becomes part of Oberursel on April 1st, 1972. The committee protecting the interests of Oberstedten starts working in Oktober of 1972.

In between 1860 and today there has been a change in the structure of professions resulting in a shift from peasant village to working class district. After WW II. the working class district further developed to be a residential neighborhood.

Nowadays, about 5700 people live in Stierstadt.

1348 Construction of St. Sebastians chapel. However, it is not until 1918 that the church community becomes a parish independent from Oberursel. The leaning tower of the chapel has been preserved during the renovations, even during the new construction in both 1826 as well as 1969/1971.

Sanssouris Castle

The Sanssouris Castle is located in Stierstadt at the railroad embankment. This is where Victor Otto Stomps operated the “Eremite´s Press”. The Sanssouris Castle is also called “the castle without mice” - an allusion to the often financially precarious situation of the Eremite´s Press.
