Weisskirchen

The history of Weisskirchen

818 First certified record of „Wizenkirchen“ in the copy of a “Lehensverzeichnis” of the year 1250/1260. The content of a different entry accounts for the existence as early as 1171/1191.

Since the first settlement of the village must have been prior to that time, in 1980 it was officially suggested that June 24, 818 was to be the anniversary date for celebration purposes. Weisskirchen shared the (national) fate with nearby Oberursel.

In the middle ages, Weisskirchen was appendant to the church “Mutterkirche Krutzen (Crutzen)” in “Kalbacher Feld” and ranked second in regards of importance. After the main church of Krutzen ceases to exist, in 1535 the second church in Weisskirchen inherits the rights and power.

1524 The Reformation is replaced by the counter-Reformation between 1604 and 1606. It is not until 1823 that children of Protestant faith are allowed to school. At first the Protestant community in Weisskirchen is taken care of by the Protestant church of Kronberg , while in 1847 Oberursel founds a Protestant community on its own. Founded in the year 1955, the church community of Stierstadt/Weißkirchen separates from the church of Oberursel in 1968. In 1992 it is renamed “Community of Reconciliation”

1622 Pillage of Weisskirchen. During the war from 1618-1648 numerous lootings take place.

1780 54 houses in Weisskirchen, while 3 of them have been desolated.

1860 “Homburger Bahn“ (Homburg railway) traveling from Frankfurt to Homburg starts its business - one of the stops is Weisskirchen. In 1910 the electrified tram Frankfurt/Hohemark has a stop in Weisskirchen.

1945 The invasion of American Troups on March 3rd 1945 marks the end of National Socialism and WW II. As late as February 1945, many people had been killed in a bomb attack on the railway and the „First South German Ceresin Factory“ that had formerly been established in 1891.

1965 Due to the construction of the higher elementary school in Stierstadt/Weißkirchen (opened in 1965, later comprehensive school) Weisskirchen achieves a high school on its own, followed by the construction of the present day elementary school in 1966/1967.

1972 On the basis of local government reform, Weisskirchen becomes part of Oberursel on April 1st, 1972. The committee protecting the interests of Weisskirchen starts working in Oktober of 1972.

Today the northern part of Weisskirchen, so-called “Oberursel South” (the area around “Zimmersmühlenweg”) is considered to be the most important industrial area in Oberursel. Well-known companies hold their offices in this part of town.

Nowadays, about 5300 people live in Weisskirchen.
